By Dina S. Ngiga (Med Student at Muhimbili University [MUHAS]), Published on May 31, 2025

Introduction

National Cancer Survivors Day is a global celebration that honors the strength, resilience, and lives of people who have survived cancer. In Tanzania, the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) joins this movement by organizing a special walk-a-thon to mark the day. This annual event brings together survivors, caregivers, families, healthcare professionals, and community members in a powerful show of solidarity and hope. The walk-a-thon is more than a symbolic gesture—it is a public call to recognize the challenges cancer survivors face and the support systems they need to thrive after treatment.

Held on the first Sunday of June each year, the National Cancer Survivors Day Walk-a-thon at ORCI offers a platform for survivors to share their journeys, inspire others, and raise awareness about the realities of life after cancer. The walk typically begins and ends at the ORCI grounds, drawing hundreds of participants who walk side-by-side in celebration and remembrance.

The event features inspirational speeches from survivors, health talks from oncologists and nurses, music, entertainment, and free cancer screening services. It also serves as a fundraising opportunity to support cancer care programs and advocate for policy changes that benefit survivors. For many, the walk-a-thon is an emotional and empowering experience—a moment to reflect on their journey and celebrate life beyond diagnosis.

The walk not only honors survivors but also emphasizes the importance of early detection, access to treatment, and long-term survivor care. ORCI uses this day to reinforce the message that cancer is no longer a death sentence and that many people are living long, healthy, and fulfilling lives after treatment, thanks to advances in medical care and community support.

The National Cancer Survivors Day Walk-a-thon at ORCI is a meaningful event that unites people from all walks of life around a common cause: celebrating survival and promoting hope. It reminds us all of the importance of supporting those affected by cancer—not only during treatment but throughout their entire survivorship journey. As cancer cases continue to rise in Tanzania and across the globe, events like these play a vital role in reducing stigma, promoting education, and building a community of care.

Conclusion

Today 31 May 2025 at Dar es Salaam, We had the honor of volunteering at the National Cancer Survivors Day walk-a-thon at ORCI. We visited patients in the wards, shared food, and most importantly, shared love and presence. It was deeply emotional—seeing firsthand what cancer patients go through, from chemotherapy to ICU, reminded me how fragile and precious life is. Some were fighting hard, some felt hopeless—but every one of them deserves our prayers and support.

Let’s remember: cancer is preventable. Through healthy choices (primary prevention) and early detection (secondary prevention), we can protect ourselves and those we love. Pray, care, act. Let’s stand together for health, for hope, and for healing.
